The research group for Geomicrobiology at the Institute for Geosciences at the University of
Tuebingen
is looking for a PhD student working for 3 years on

‘Iron biogeochemistry in Lake Constance sediments

Project:
Iron is one of the major redox elements in the Earth crust and biogeochemical cycling of iron in the environment determines the cycling of many elements (C, N, etc.), nutrients (P) and pollutants (As, organic contaminants). Respiratory pathways based on iron redox transformations are used by many microorganisms. However, it is not well understood how iron cycling is influenced by varying physicochemical conditions (i.e. fluctuating O2 or light levels, pH changes). The proposed research project is aimed at a better understanding of the complex biogeochemical iron cycle in a freshwater ecosystem. This project investigates microbial and geochemical iron transformation with the goal to provide new insights into the coupling of biotic and abiotic iron redox reactions in the environment. Geochemical analyses (i.e. use of microsensors and wet-chemical techniques), mineralogical studies (i.e. XRD, Moessbauer spectroscopy) and microbiological approaches (cultivation dependent and ind!
ependent techniques including molecular ecological analyses based on DNA and RNA techniques) will be used to study sediments from Lake Constance (Bodensee).

A PhD student position is available to study parameters of the fish immune system. The PhD student will use histological, ultrastructural and biochemical methods to investigate the development of the primary lymphoid organs and other immune parameters in a fish model organism (Dicentrachtus labrax) throughout the early life stages. The candidate will examine how lymphoid organs and associated immune functions may be impaired by environmental pollutants. Eventually, the candidate will aim at developing markers of immunotoxicity that can be used in ecotoxicological biomonitoring programmes.

A full-time Research Assistant is sought for molecular biological and transgenic mouse work at the Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (http://www.cemm.oeaw.ac.at) in the research group of Denise Barlow studying Epigenetic Mechanisms In Development and Disease. The position is initially available as a maternity-leave replacement but has the possibility of a permanent position. The work includes breeding and maintaining transgenic mouse strains, Southern blot-based mouse genotyping, standard molecular biology techniques, general lab management and organization.

A postdoc position/group leader position is available in the Department of Plant Systems Biology at the Life Sciences Campus Freising-Weihenstephan of the Technische Universität München. The successful applicant is expected to establish a novel research program that is concerned with the role of ubiquitin or ubiquitin-like proteins in plant biology. Employment is initially for 3 years but can be extended to allow for the establishment of an independentresearch group.

We make use of several advanced molecular and cell biologicy techniques to address biological questions related to protein degradation in plant development and plant hormone signaling.
